I am re-building an old website which has all its file extensions at .htm

Im going to build them a cms and their site to be controlled dynamically.

My question is with regard to not having to lose the .htm files because they are already very established in the search engines, and have asp functinality?

Not really. I would gather the closest way would be to include files but that sounds messy.

why not just change the extension?

Well changing the extensions is the only option I now of, but all those links to pages in the search engines will go nowhere then, and basically the links would be starting all over again.

My only other thought was to put re-direction scripts on al the pages to the asp pages, or even use web forwarding.

But basically its a SEO thing that bothers me, and that all those years of building those links up in the search engines to the specific files will be lost.

The search engines should populate the new URL's I believe within 72 hours.

There is a search engine optimization forum I would ask this question in though for a more accurate answer on that.

It would be nice if it worked like that :D

Changing the extensions on an existing indexed site will cause disruption for SE results for anything up to 4 months. Even applying 301 redirects will take up to 3 months to take hold.

The easiest method is to use the application mapping on the server

also take a look at thread828-1321205 for a 404 page solution. (use the server.transfer method to avoid SE disruption)

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Definitely go with Application Mapping. Right-click on the website in the IIS manager and choose Properties. Under the Home Directory tab, click Configuration. You will see three columns- Extension, Executable Path, and Verbs. Copy the Executable Path and Vers for the .asp extension, then click Add. Use .htm and/or .html as the new extension and the copied Executable Path and Verbs/ (this assumes that there is not already an entry for .htm/.html. If there is, Edit instead of Add).

You can tell its been years sense I developed anything that was public. Thanks for the correction ChrisHirst :)
