Have a 60GB IDE drive (nearly 4 years old). Was main drive in my PC till PC blew up about 20 months ago (it survived, second drive didn't).

Had it as second drive when rebuilt PC - until a few weeks ago, when I replaced it with a larger drive. I decided to use it in a new test machine I was setting up. All ok so several weeks, then suddenly drive 'died'. Tried it in other machines - no good. Was abot to throw it away - decided to try it again. Worked! But after a while, stopped again. So, its become obvious that after it warms up, something becomes unstuck.

Is this a lost cause or could drive be repaired - I haven't tried putting a fan on it to keep it cooler yet? (ie, does anyone here have any idea what part of the circuitry might be causing this, and if so how easy to do something about it).

I suspect I'll just have to throw it away, but thought I'd ask.

yeh! although its a hard drive question, I thought (correctly) I'd get more response in the General forum.

Haven't thrown it away yet - putting a fan on it keeps it running for several hours (something to occupy me when I'm bored!)
