Somehow we have been running as an Open Relay for the past month. I have shut down the Virtual SMTP server and restricting access like should have been done.

I am currently deleting the jillions of files in my Badmail directory. There were so many that I had to do it from DOS.

Could I have just deleted the Badmail directory and recreated it?

If so, can I do that for my Queue directory? There are still 15,000 messages in it:( Deleting the whole directory and recreating it would sure save time.

If I can't just delete it, is it ok to delete the *.* contents of it from DOS? I dont want to shoot myself in the foot and delete anything necessary!

Thanks in advance! Refreshing madly to check for answers.

You could stop your SMTP Service, then rename the \badmail directory, created a new one, then deleted the old one entirely, yes. This is done at the command prompt or via a batch file.

Don't forget to restart your SMTP when you're done!

Thanks!

Will do that immediately, since who knows now many NDRs are in the Badmail folder...it has been deleting for over an hour!

Can I do the same with the Queue directory?

Check this thread, lots of good info: thread858-725603

Sorry...didn't see your reply.

No, the queue, unfortunately, has to be done through the System Manager, and it's a major pain, but it's the only way to empty it out manually. If you're settings are setup to expire after X days, then they'll go away after that time, but most of us hate having them sit there eating up clock cycles, so we delete them.

Whew, thanks!

I am sure I came close to borking things up. Tons of gratitude to you!

Sure is slow enumerating that directory, isn't it? Try disabling 8.3 name suppurt while you're at it. Should help speed things up.

Hi all,

The following also could be done regarding the queue being filled up.

(1) Stop SMTP Protocol Service
(2) Stop SMTP Virtual Server
(3) Rename the Mailroot folder to MailrootOld
(4) Start the SMTP Service
(5) Start the SMTP Virtual Server
(This should create new Mailroot folder)
(6)Go to MAILROOTOLD folder and cut and paste the contents of the "Queue" folder to the "Pickup" folder in the new mailroot folder

Now with over 15,000 messages in the queue folder you can pick and choose what messages you would want or you can just not copy any of the messages back if you feel they are all NDR's and not good emails.

zoeythecat - Had no idea you could do that! Enjoy the star. ;)

Lander,

Thanks for the star. Only reason I knew this was because of the call I had opened with Microsoft who had me troubleshoot the BadMail queue filling up which I noted in the thread you listed here. What I didn't additionally list was the Microsoft Tech was also concerned about the Queue filling up and he had me do these steps to empty out the queue folder. Sorry for not listing that in the thread. Happy I can add something.

Regards,
Zoey
