Can I copy the List I have and use the copy as a test version?

I have an existing list in sharepoint but i essentially want a copy of it to make the copy my test version for upgrades. is there any way to do this or do I need to "recreate" the existing list in order to test?

i believe you can save the list as a template with the content included and redeploy it elsewhere for testing.
