I have been told that I could connect to Red Hat 9.0 using Remote Desktop, but everytime I look for ways to do this I see links to setting up VNC.

I want to use Windows version of Remote Desktop to connect to Redhat 9.0, any help provided would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen anything than vnc, or ssh used to connect to a linux box remotely, from a Windows desktop.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

stefan, XP comes with a program called Remote Desktop Connection, it used to be called Terminal Services Client, but they added support to connect to XP Pro Workstations, so they changed the name to Remote Desktop.

I am using VNC right now, but I am looking for alternatives. I have seen some links pointing to remote desktop and Linux, but most point to VNC.

A Windows Remote Desktop client can not connect to a Linux machine. Some time ago, while playing with Fedora Core 2, I saw something in the add/remove packages gui, that sounded like it might be linux client software to connect to a Windows Remote Desktop enabled host; but I never got around to investigating if that's what it actaully was and I don't currently have Fedora installed.

One other method to connect & control a Linux machine that hasn't been mentioned is Webmin. But this is not really a 'remote desktop' or vnc type of application.

That's correct. There's a Linux RDP client called "rdesktop" and it works quite well.

For the other direction, I use either VNC or XWindows.

Guys!! actually you need an X server in windows in order to get the X environment from Linux (connected to the redhat), so you have several products to do that (google the following):

- Reflection X
- Exceed
- Xmanager

and the best for me (and free):

- Cygwin (
What they do is install an X server in windows, so you can ssh or telnet to the Linux (or any unix) and "export DISPLAY=your_IP:0.0" and run any graphic apps, (like "xclock" to test)

VNC is a solution for Windows beccause windows does not have X server, AS LINUX HAVE!!!

Cheers.

Chaca,
to be picky, your X Server is on the linux box. Remote X services are running on your windows box. Not a big deal, but might confuse someone trying to google their way to success.

thedaver: you are right, thanks for correct me. But, actually what I'm posting is the fact that you don't need something like VNC but open another "user session" using X environmet from windows.

thanks again thedaver.
