OK. I know this is *really, really dumb* but here goes
anyway...

I have been building a website for class using Front Page
98. I have uploaded it to Geocities using Ws-ftp.

Everything has been working fine.

I recently purchased a domain and space on another server.

And they tell me this:
When you design your site using FrontPage 2000, you MUST
upload it using the built in upload feature within
FrontPage 2000 itself, this is IMPORTANT if you are using
any FrontPage extension features like the counter, search
form etc. If you upload pages with these features using
FTP, then they will not work...i.e. the counter will not
count etc. Also, pages uploaded with FTP can NOT be deleted
or modified using FrontPage Publishing, you will
get "permission denied" errors, so you must try not to mix
FTP uploading with FrontPage uploading.

OK, so I thought I would try to publish using Front Page.
I went to File -> publish Front Page Web,
I chose "more webs".
I typed in my new domain name.
Then I get a dialog box that says "this operation requires
author permission for and there is a place for
me to type in my name and password. I have typed in every
combination of my name and password I have ever used and I
still can't get past this box.
Where am I going wrong?
If I have truely forgotten my name and/or password, can I
change them somehow?

Thank you so much.

Had a similar problem with a host 6 months ago. I had uploaded two diferent websites to the same address. In my mind it would have written over the past web site.
This is where the hosts get a little lazy. I asked them to delete the contents of the web site so that I could start afresh. This they would not do and they changed some configurations form their end so that I could upload the new web site.
Beofre they did this I would have the user name and password flash up on the screen so many times that I thought something was wrong with my keyboard.
Just a little bit of background for the problem that I had with a similar simptoms.
Best thing to do is ask your host for advise.
