You could point FireFox users to the Register protocol article, then anyone interested in using those links should set up their own browsers.

There is also the Web-based protocol handlers, which could help doing something as above, partially automated. But I was never interested in this possibility, so I that article is still buried at the bottom of my to read list. So better read it yourself.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, that option would not be acceptable by business - would require no user intervention, even for first use. Also, since IE is the only browser blessed by the company (FF is given a pass), this doesn't seem to apply*.

* yes, I mentioned FF in my post. I use it as my primary, but most only have IE8/6 with no option to install anything else.
