Can I apply an existing backup to a new BCM400?

BCM400, 4.0

Customer system crashed, not yet sure why. Attached a moniter and screen won't get past "Uncomressing Linux... loading kernal".

So we order an advance replacement which should arrive tomorrow.

I have two backups of this system from earlier this year. What danger is there of loading one of these backups on a blank system?

Anyone done this yet?

As long as it's the same s/w rls ur ok. Just load the lastest SU patch before hand as new system needs same patches as what's in restore. Latest SU will have all the old patches as well as some new ones.

Me personally I think load the backup first, then run the latest patches. There is section in SU read me which states.

Restoring a 'backup' taken from a BCM prior to CoreTel version 2.03 (BCM.R400.SU.System.002-200708)
to a system greater than version 2.03 is not supported.
Restores have been confirmed to work if it's taken from the BCM with BCM.R400.SU.System.002-200708
or 'later releases' applied.
Note: "Bulletin 023997 - Business Communication Manager (BCM) 4.0 Backup and Restore" has been
issued to provide further information.

However, I am not speaking from experience here, as I have not had the pleaseure of having any of my systems crash as yet. Maybe Dasheen is speaking from experinence so I wouldn't like to contradict in any way. Just thought i'd mention my views.

The important thing that I would say is that you must have an up to date Element Manager installed as trying to install patches via an old version will result in problems.

All that matters is getting the customers database restored with a good operating system.

If you were to install the database first and patches second, then you could schedule the system SU patch to be applied out of hours?.

We do this all the time here in our company and we have found that if you do not have the New system with exact same patches it will not work. We have close to a hundred sites everyone has been cooky cut from one backup until we got a BCM with a new load of the latest patches. Then it corrupts the software then we would need to re-image then install patches. So if your backup had certain patches and they are not current and your replacement has latest patches you may have to rebuild system from scratch you cannot remove patches from a BCM. I presume you are replacing with a 400 ? ? ? Hope this helps. . .

Thanks for all the replies!!

Ultimately the back-up didn't work. I presume because of differences in patches as dj4020 mentioned.

Just rebuilt the new system as close as we could to original specs.
