Not sure if this is what i should do but i think it might help? I upgraded from ME to xp and in doing so i have my old ME on my c drive which has plenty of free space left (only using 8gb out of 28). My new operating system, xp is now on my d drive(much smaller only 8gb) and only leaving me with 2gb free space.

I think this is what is causing my computer to run so slow.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

So you haven't really upgraded - you've created a dual boot machine. If you don't want ME any more, I'd backup, and clean install XP, using its (XP setup) partitioning tools to remove the 2 existing ones and create one new one - or at least one large enough for XP if you want to keep 2 partitions). If you want to keep dual boot, then you need something like Partition Manager to resize the partitions (ie, shrink C: & expand D:). If you take this route - make sure you backup first, as though PM is a good program, things can go wrong..

PS - this question should really be in one of the operating system (ME forum748, XP forum779) forums, as its a software rather than hardware issue.

Of course the absolute best option is to back up what you want on CD and reformat everything. Then if you still need to change the partition size.

Nah, reformatting and reinstalling either OS is more work than is needed. Partition Magic is excellent for managing partition size. As wolluf said, make sure you backup just in case something happens during the resize (power failure, power spike, etc).

cdogg - potential problems merging these partitions.

1. If XP is on NTFS - I've had mixed success merging after converting one of partitions to same filestore type as other.

2. XP boot sector on C: may get damaged/wiped in the merge.

3. Assuming all does go well - doesn't PM create a folder in the first partition which contains contents of second? So, will need to 'unpack' XP from this folder to the root of new C:. Also, boot.ini will need editing as XP now on first not second partition. Also, XP will now be on C: - but all its registry references will be to D:.

So - I wouldn't use PM, more potential trouble than its worth.

wolluf -

Actually, PM is able to change both partitions without altering the boot sector. I was under the assumption that the user just wanted to change the size of the partitions and NOT merge them. Changing the size is the safest thing you can do in PM (though I ALWAYS recommend a backup first).

However, you do bring up an excellent point about NTFS vs. FAT32. If the file systems are different, then it might pose a slight problem, although PM is equipped with the ability to handle both.

All good questions, guess we'll just need to wait to hear back from cmill.
