Can I add mirroring to an existing, unmirrored drive?

I have a Compaq DL580 that was Raid1 until both drives failed. I only had one spare drive so I rebuilt the server using it. Of course it is no longer mirrored. I now have a replacement drive and want to add it to the server as a mirror to the existing drive. I am being told I have to completely rebuild the OS in order to do this. Is there no way to add the second drive and turn mirroring on with the existing drive 0 as prime and the new drive 1 as the mirror without losing data or OS? I have considered "ghosting" the existing drive, set up mirroring and re-imaging the drive. However it would seem that the hardware should be capable of mirror-on-the-fly. Has anyone done this or know how it could be done?
