My friend (has no recovery disk) took her 2nd hand older computer with Windows 98 to a computer tech.to fix video as was looking "cartoonish". Comuter tech. said pc had viruses so he ran adware (similar to spybot)..then tech. added updated drivers for modem and video.. saying they were removed by adware.. sent her home with computer .. now she can get to AOL home page but cannot get to Internet for ANY URL. This girl just lost her mom and the Internet is her only resolve that takes her mind off her issues.. I am a programmer so she asks me for help.. this is a non-pay situation.. but I am at a true loss as I have tried to no avail and don't know how else to help her.. and still going in circles wasting a lot of time trying to find answers.. She spent hours on the phone with AOL and they can't help her either.. then she wnet back to the computer tech.. For add'l. $65. per hour, says he removed and reinstalled modem.. and reconfigured modem.. but still does not work.. Computer tech. will no longer help her without his add'l. $65. per hr. of which she's paid 3 hrs. too much already ..to get no where.. can anyone help me help my friend.. also, she lives out of state and I need to walk her through this on the phone.. if at all possible. I appreciate your help..

Thank you so much for your response but still hoping you can help me further..Downloaded and executed the WinsockFix.exe that you wanted us to do... But she still gets same error.. I had her reboot.. and we walked through Internet Option in Control panel and I made sure all here seetings were ok.. equal to min .. still she cannot get to the Internet URLs outside of the AOL home page.. I also had her run a thorough scan/defrag through Maintenance Wizard.. but still she can't get to Internet.. Any ideas from here?

AOL Tech

WOW!

Talk about similar situations!

I have a friend [also separated by states] with a very similar problem. He's running WinME and downloaded HistoryKiller. He doesn't remember all of what he chose to kill but since running it, he can dial into AOL but can not access any internet sites outside of AOL. While dialled in, I had him open a DOS window, do IPCONFIG and record the IP address and DNS servers. I had him ping the DNS server and they respond. I had him ping but it returns bad host message. I had him an IP address for Yahoo and it responds.

Any thoughts on what could be blocking the name resolution?

Thanks in advance.
