In an attempt to add new disk space to an IBM server the task was done incorrectly. It seems that instead of adding the drives to the existing logical drive, they were added to the array. Now it seems th eonly option is to create a new logical drive. Can the drives be removed without destroying the existing array?

No, once you do a logical drive migration it can not be undone. You would have to delete the array and start over.
