We have a folder on a server w/11,000+ files in it and I have to generate a monthly report comparing the file names to a database. I have to use WordPerfect to generate a file w/the file names in it. Then I paste the list into excel and trim off the first six characters and save as an Access table that I can run against a Paradox db. Yes, it is a pain in the a**.

I would like to do it directly if possible but could shorten it by a step or two if cr11 could get me the list of the first six chars in the file names and check to see that they are numeric.

Hope that makes sense.

thanks
mike

To write a report against files on the local machine, you would go to the database expert->create new connection->file system data->browse to the folder you want to use as your datasource. In some cases, "file system data" isn't available on the table list, and I can't remember why.

You can then write a formula using the mid function to eliminate the first 6 characters:

mid({table.file},7)

-LB

You make it look so easy. That is exactly what I needed. Cuts about 1/2 hour off my monthly chore.

Thanks!
