I have ready my sites/posts about simiral issues but wanted to have my question addressed to be sure that I am not under the wrong impression.

Objective is just to learn MS .NET 2.0 programming using C-sharp and SQL SERVER 2005, I am thinking of buying a computer. I am under the impression that regular Pentium machines are the one supporting IIS, Windows 2003 Server, SQL Server and Programming compilers.

But someone at my work suggested that Celeron or Semprons are equally good, and I won't find any major difference as I am not using any high graphics games or AutoCAD etc. Only programming related softwares are my target.

Is it OK to buy Celeron or Sempron processors. Currently I use Intel P4 1.7 MHz and 512 RDRAM.

Thanks in advance.

Celeron 4 are basically PIV with a reduced FSB and LESS CACHE...

so to answer your question, for your needs it would be ok...

btw. your impressions that only Pentiums support IIS, Windows 2003 Server, SQL Server and Programming compilers, is wrong...

I would have gone ahead with Semprons, since they are good budget processors compared to their counterparts, Intel's Celeron offering.

I wud advise you to read some reviews on Sempron and Celeron based CPU's for better judgement.
And do remeber that even tho the PC is not built for gaming or any other multimedia work that doesnt mean it shud be as meagre as possible. Infact if you end up buying a very low end PC it would or would not provide any benefits over yur current P4 system. So be mindful of that and make a well informed decision.

As far as your doubts go, it aint true. You can run IIS as long as you have enuf resources on your PC to install Windows 2000/XP or a Windows Server product. Same goes for .net 2.0 and SQL Server 2005, but these products may be demanding and might perform better on a gud PC like a P4 over 2.4 Gigs or an AMD over 2400+ ( since I had slower performance installing .net 2.0 on my Piii 800 )
