I been working at this for days.
I set up a W2k Server connected to a SMC Barricade DSL/Cable router hub(connected to AT&T Cable Broadband) and using AOL as ISP to test the vpn through dialup. I can connect to the server. The real problem is I don't know much about RRAS or Win2k Server. The Barricade is my DCHP.
I don't know if it the server or the router.
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

The router giving IPs is probably the problem. Try running your DHCP off the server. Matt Wray

what are you using for a vpn client, are you using ipsec or anything like that. Make sure the client protocol can pass thru the router Shakamon

I think I have DHCP turned off. I went into services and set it to manual. The SMC7004bR is doing the DCHP. I just added new dial up connection on windows 98 (SE) and selected vpn. I am totaly confused now.

I think you should turn DHCP off on the router and run it on your server. If you were able to connect previously, you know it was setup right. If you were unable to browse or access network resources than it was probably an IP issue. If you still want to use the router for DHCP, I think you neeed to edit your VPN setup. Where it asks how to allocate IPs to remote clients, set a small static range in the same range as the rest of your clients. Matt Wray

If you were able to authenticate with the Win 98 client then your tunnel is fine. You will not be able to browse the network with the network neighborhood. Try to ping the IP of the server once the connection is made. to use the network neighbor hood you have to enable netbeui on both sides to find pc on the iother side. if not you have to know the ip address or where yopu would like to map to.

I tried using the DHCP on the server.
I tried seeting a range of ip address.
I can't ping to the server.
I can see myself as a RRAS client.

Still no luck.
Is there anywhy we can set up a chat or can I call by phone. I been at this for weeks and it is killing my main task which is database design.
I would appreciate it very much I am note a network tech.

Thanks

First thing to try I think is to disable DHCP on your server and give your server NIC a static ip of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
on eack of your clients give a static ip of 192.168.0.2 on the first and 192.168.0.3 on the next and so on all with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
Then from each client open a command prompt and type ping 192.168.0.1 you should get a send and reply time and if any packets have been lost.
If all is well see if you can locate the server on each client through the network neighborhood icon on the desktop.
if this works I would set up the clients to detect network settings automatically (through DHCP).Is the server still visible after this?
Also on the clients in a command prompt type ipconfig /all and tell me what it displays.

In your RRAS properties, IP tab what adapter do you have to get your DHCP and DNS from? It should be your LAN NIc address. I disagree with the above post, I think DHCP should be fine. And if you run a IPCONFIG you are probably still not getting an IP from your server. You can Email me and I'll give you my phone number, as I just set this up myself not even a week ago I still have it pretty fresh in my feeble mind. Matt Wray

Thank you Matt.
My problem was that I need to assign a static IP range on Windows 2000 server Remote Access that matched my IP range on my Barricade smc7004br.

Thanks again to everyone for their help.
This is the best forum I have ever seen.
