Howdy folks! We're running 8.5 and for the most part we've got the backups running smoothly. After a sysadmin quit we went through a huge round of password changing, which of course resulted in a few hangups here and there.

Backup exec is consistently unable to attach to 2 servers in the network, getting the Access Denied error. I'm a little perplexed - why is it able to attach to all the servers with its new password, but not these two? What settings do I need to check? It was working fine before the password changing. I've read in some of these threads something about synchronizing... I can find no info in the Help files of Backup Exec, anyone want to enlighten me as to what that is and how to do it?

Secondly there is one server whose System State checkbox is greyed out. How do I fix that so I can back up its System State? None of the other servers seem to suffer this.

Thanks to all who contribute!!!

On the two servers that you are getting 'Access Denied', did you double check to ensure the password was changed on those servers?

The only Backup Exec service running on the servers being backed up is Remote Agent, and all of them use the Local System account, including the servers that are being successfully backed up. Exactly which password are you talking about?

I found this post somewhere that says:

It may be a corrupt password cache file.

Stop BENT services
delete BEWINUI.UNI
Restart BENT

YOu'll lose any user-defined shares and will need to re-enter all user-id/password info for all shares.

So stopped the service, got rid of the file and restarted the service. But what do they mean by "re-entering all user-id/password info for all shares"? Where do I need to do that? In the Backup Exec interface somewhere? In the services?

I had this problem, the Veritas technote 233862 solved this, the relevant details I used are shown below:

1. Click the Backup Selections tab on the bottom left of the screen.
2. Browse Entire Network or User Defines Shares to the resource giving the "access denied" message.
3. Select the resource.
4. Go to the top of the screen to NETWORK and enter a valid administrator account and password for the selected resource.

Hope this helps

The shares they are refering to are shared directories. If you had any shared directories, you 'broke' the connection to them and need to relogin to the share(s). Shares are created when you need access to a directory on another (remote) workstation. The share shows up as the drive letter followed by the dollar sign (i.e. D$).

Thanks to you all for your suggestions. None of them worked, LOL! But the technote article that LordBoy pointed out was where I found my answer. The part he summarized wasn't it, but the article had a section on alternate actions. What worked was adding the Backup Exec user account to the local Administrator group of the uncooperative server. And it was able to attach then! WOO HOO!!!
