Hi,

I am using Veritas 8.6 with Win 2k SBS, I am currently using a strategy that backs up everything each night.

What would be the best strategy for me?

Thanks in advance.

How often do things change? How much data loss can you accept?

I use Veritas BE 8.6 for backing up my MS SQL Server 2000 databases. I use SQL to do the backups and then Veritas copies the .bak files to tape.

I currently do a full backup of all databases every night. SQL also has transaction logs and I back them up every 8 hours. That way if I need to restore one or more databases, I can do it almost to the minute I lost the database.

With only one backup a day, you potentially can lose 24 hours of data. Is that acceptable to you?

Base your backup strategy on what you are backing up (Databases, system state, exchange server, etc) and the two questions I started this with.

How many servers do you have?
How much data do you have?
What is your backup window?
Are you backing up through your network?
What hardware are you using? Libraries? Tape drives?
What type of technology are you using?? DLT? LTO? 8MM?
Do you have any specific applications?? SQL? Oracle? Exchange?
What backup software are you using?

Give us an quick brief of your environtment & what it is you are trying to achieve (ie reduce backup time etc).

We are all willing to help but we need more information!!

Hi,

Thanks for the insight.

We only have 1 server, and 20 users.

We are backing up the server only not through the network.

We have Exchange 2000

I am using DAT tapes, backing up about 20+GB of data nightly.

Thanks again.
