can anyone explain DMZ as all the litrature i found is to hardcore for me

internet---firewall---DMZ---firewall---your network

The DMZ allows you to protect and publish "public" resources without allowing anyone access to your private network. Many people put webservers in this area. I have a terminalserver accessable via the net this way.

I will give the example of netscreen firewall.
Netscreen firewall has got three ports:
untrusted
trusted
dmz

untrusted port is given the legal ip and is the outside port of the network connected to router.

trusted port is given a local lan ip and is the inside port of the network connected to the local lan.

dmz port is the port to which u can connect live servers. This provides security from both the internal world and internal local lan. Even the people in local lan cannot access the server once it is placed in dmz port.
