Hi All,
I am new to TCP/IP world. Could anyone get into my pc through cable internet and wireless. What is the most important info that i should never give out. Reason, i am asking is my pc hard drive seems to always blinking sugusting that some one is accessing it. How can i check to see if anyone is doing so. Helppppppppp.

Depending on the version of windows you have - you can try a very nice packet capture application called ethereal. You need to install winpcap first - there are instructions on ethereal's web site:

winpcap does have a little difficulty with dial-up connections however (works on some versions of windows and not others) - so if your cable internet connetion is not through an ethernet card you may have trouble. If so, I would then suggest you use the microsoft netmon - this is usually present on the install CD of win2k and XP. (not sure about NT4 or win98 etc)

If you're running XP, keep in mind that the indexing service comes turned on by default, so when you're not busy the OS will merrily wander around the hard drive and index the contents for "faster searching". This has nothing to do with network/internet/etc.

Get yourself a good firewall if you have an "always on" (cable/DSL/broadband) connection. A free ones is available from
Then you can see exactly what program is sending/receiving.
