Can any Brand access Point be used a MotorolaWR850g Router

Hi I have a Motorola Wr850G Router Connecting a Network of 2 Computers (1 Tethered and 1 Wireless)and would like to expand it to another computer on the 1st floor. I can't get a good signal and was told by a Mototrola Tech that I would need an access point to acheive this. My ? to you is do I need to buy a Motorola WA840G Access Point and follow suit with the Motorola Brand or could a D-link or Linksys or any other brand be Compatible? Thanks in advance for your help.
