Can AD users be associated as users of the SharePoint system

Hi,
I'm new to company,and have been assigned a fairly large client with Sharepoint. Right now all submitted comments to the discussion group look like they come from "SHEEO" since that's the common user name so far. How do associate AD users to the SharePoint system work so they will be authenticated users of the discussion group?
