Ive read conflicting statments in Oracle documentation. I have read that views can be updateable, but when I try to use a view in Developer forms 6i and update the data, Developer states simply that views can not be used to update data.

What is the truth of updatable views... can it be done?

thanks

In Developer (Forms 6i) you can update views but you have to write your own On-Insert, On-Update and On-Delete triggers.

And yes, you can update via views in the database. However, for complex views you will probably have to write INSTEAD OF triggers.

Im assuming that using updateable views is NOT the preferred way to do it in Oracle Developer? Developer and its data blocks just seem to really marginal in useability compared to using something like VB. Should I be planning on doing more hand coding and relying less on just building forms with developer?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You are right that using updateable views is NOT the preferred way to do it in Oracle Developer. I always use block based on a table if I want to insert/update/delete.
There are wizards (Data Block Wizard,Layout Wizard ...) which help you to build a form in Forms there. It is easy to build the form with using wizards. They do a lot of work for you.
