I want to set a system so that any accounts created will default to a starting UID of 6500 (or the next available from that base number). The numbers below 6500 would be "reserved" for specific accounts that need to have the same UID across several systems.

On AIX, is it possible to set the minimum number at which the system will start generating UID #s (if not explicitly specified)?

Interesting Question!

I personally never heard of that! but i think you can write a script that will daily check the /etc/passwd for new users created and check their UIDs and then warn you for any users created below your specified limit! by doing that you can assure that every one obay that rule!

Khalid

I believe in /etc/security there's a hidden file named

/etc/security/.ids

In this file you can set the next id to be used for non-admin and admin users. after user creation the id is incremented in the file, so you can skip to 6500 if you want.

p5wizard - I will look into that on Monday (dont have remote access at this time).

khalidaaa - I have thought about writing a script do that but thought I would check to see if there is any kind of built-in functionality first.

Excellent tip p5wizard!
I've never seen that file before!

p5wizard - now that I have access to the system... the .ids file in /etc/security is exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks for the tip.

For anyone else who may be looking into this file, more info on the fields can be found at the bottom of this page:

There's a star for ya, p5wizard.

I have absolutely no use for this, but I'll tuck it away in a corner of my mind for when I do. :)
