hi
Can a 8 pin cord converted to a 2 pr 4 pin cord how do i do that

thanks

Get an 8-pin cord coupler. Plug the 8-pin cord into one side. Plug the 4-pin cord into the other side. Although the female is 8 pins wide, the 4-pin plug will center in the socket.

This assumes that you can't get to the jack on the wall; if you can, just unplug the the 8-pin cord from the wall jack, throw it away, and plug in your 4-pin cord instead.

What are you trying to connect your cordless phone to? As I believe you have a Merlin Legend, is this jack connected to a MLX or ATL port? If so, you need to re-jumber it to a T/R port to use a cordless phone.

The size of the jack doesn't matter so much as what it connects to at the other end.

Get your planning forms and look at the jack number on the wall then note what the form says it is connected to on the switch.

If you don't have planning forms then get your tone and probe set, connect the toner to pin 7 and 8 and probe down where it plugs into on the switch.
Then write it in your planning form

If you don't have a tone and probe set, and are up for an adventure get an mlx and/or atl set and plug it in. MLX-menu, more, prog will show the extension. ATL- call the operator. ask her "what number am i calling from".

BTW- I don't know what happens if you plug and atl into an mlx jack, or vice verse. beware

If you are not up for any of that then get your cabling guy to find out what it goes to.

If you don't have a cable guy then get one and have him figure out and document where all those wires go to and come from, as you'll surely need that info sooner or later (or now).

Actually you do not want to tone pins 7 & 8 as these are power leads. You should tone pins 4 & 5 (the T&R pair). Most toners come equiped with an RJ11 plug so you can just plug it into the jack, saving you the trouble of having to take the jack apart.

franke,
is that for ATL? I thought Mlx used 1-6. For interest what's the atl pinout? All I know about it was whenever a user would plug a network device (printer, computer, etc) into an atl jack that half the switch would shut down.

"but the plugs looked the same!"

Nods on the RJ-11 bit, I usually keep a cable banjo around for those special jobs :)

all i am trying to do is canvert a 8 pin cord to a 2 pin for a cordles phone i 1 mls card and 5 408 cards

thanks

mmllxx, your conversion depends on the type of cordless phone you are trying to use, however from what you just posted, having 1 mls (MLX)and 5 408 (408 MLX or ATL) a pin conversion will not work for you as you have no T&R cards, such as a 012 or 016.

verland, the MLX set uses pins 3-6 (White-Green)& 4-5 (White-Blue) (conforming to the 568B wiring standard), MLX Consoles and sets using adjuncts use pins 7-8 (White-Brown) for powering the DSS Console. Although local power can be provided for this, the pins are still active at the module. ATL sets, as I recall use the White-Brown pair for Page over intercom. If your customer does not plan on using this feature, you can use this pair for what-ever, but as with MLX, make sure the pair is isolated from the module (on a 66 or 110 block for example) before terminateing anything on it.
