hi folks,

I've read that 2008 Enterprise can compress backup files.

Does 2005 Standard have any built-in compression capabilities... or is that only available if using a 3rd-party tool such as Redgate or Quest?

Thanks, John

Microsoft has introduced compression with SQL Server 2008, prior versions deepened on third party tool.
Going to SQL server 2008 to use compression it self a well worth it investment for storage and time. We had a 560 db backup file in SQL 2005 after migrating to SQL 2008 it went down to 170 GB andthe duration came down from 3 hours to 47 mins.
Good luck

Good Luck.

On a side note, after the backup is finished you can always zip them up if space is your only issue.
