Hello all!!
I have a .xls file I need to open. It is stored on a floppy. At some point yesterday the file became corrupt. When I try to open it I get a message telling me this: ‘File name.xls’ cannot be accessed. The file may be ready-only, or you may be trying to access a read only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding.
I have checked the properties of the file and it is set for archive. Since the file is on a floppy I checked to see if I could read and write to other files on the floppy. I can.
I know the information is still in the .xls file. I can view it with Notepad. But this does me no good. I desperately need to get back my access to this file. Is there any hope or am I doomed? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem with a Word document. I ran a full ScanDisk (including a surface scan) on the floppy and it repaired the file and allowed me to open it.

I fear the disk is damage beond repair. I ran the scan disk with surface scan and it still wont open. Thanks for the suggestions.

Before you trash the disk, I have another suggestion. If you can find an old DOS machine, try to copy the file to the hard disk. I have sucessfully saved several files using this method. Sometimes Windows is real sensitive with floppy disks.
