I have a JVC DVX4 camcorder and I am having problems getting it recognised by Windows XP Pro.
I have a firewire card installed and it is recognised by the operating system and listed as Microsoft IEEE 1394 with the message 'This device is working properly'
When I connect up my camera via the DC power supply and plug in the firewire cable, nothing happens and it is not listed in Device Manager.
I have tried restarting the computer with the camera powered up but its sill the same.
I have tried 3 different firewire cards and also tried it on Windows Me, Windows 2000 and Windows 98 SE, with no joy.
I have also tried the Texas driver.
I have DirectX 8.1 installed also Service Pack 1 in Windows XP.
I am in the UK on the PAL system.
What I would really like to know should the operating system recognise the camera without any Video Capture software installed?
I have tried Video Wave with no success.
I would hate to buy other software and find the same results.
I would be very gratefull for any information on this subject.
Thanks

Have you tested your Firewire cable?

Hello,

The camera doesn't work like a USB device. So don't expect any popup screens from windows when you hook your camera to your firewire cable. The fireware card is detected in device manager but you will never see your camera in the device manager.

In order to use the firewire card you need a piece of software that connects to your firewire card and through this card controls the camera.

You could use Adobe Premiere (expensive) or Studio Deluxe.
Als Magix has released some programs for video editing which aint expensive. It's called "video on cd and dvd" and costs around €25.

You can also look on the net for some shareware but the quality of your captures might be dissapointing.

What are you planning to do with your video captures ?
Are you planning to do some video editing? If so than you need some good software for it.

P.S. Make sure that your pc is turned off before you connect your camera to your firewire cable. When you connected your camera to the firewire cable power the camera on and after that power your pc on. If you don't follow these steps it will never work.

Hope this helps you.

Greetings,

Kocky.

I have tried VideoWave and Microsoft's Movie Maker both programs reported "No Video Capture Hardware installed'

Try inserting the firewire card into another PCI slot.
Might be a IRQ conflict.
