I am in the process of buying a digital Video camcorder. The one I am interested in says it has the following :-

IEEE1394 for transferring still images
RS232C for transferring DIGITAL still images
SD/MMC card media
AV in/out mini jack
DV IN/OUT i.LINK

I don't understand what the ports are and would appreciate advice. I have 2 PC's with the usuall COM1 & 2 ports, Printer ports, and 2 USB ports. Do I need other ports to use this Camcorder?

Please help

the cam has 5 different ports for different uses
ieee1394 is an industry standard & is used for transferring Digital coded movies on to the hard disk, it has to be fast using the USB port i think! (10mbs)
the Rs232 com 1/2 is for all the jpg stills similar to a digital still camera 20/300k per picture speed @115k ok
the Sd MMc card media is an alternative for transferring short movies up to 3 mins MPG format or lots (200) jpg stills compressed or not 20k/200k to be read on an
(external to Pc)USB/com1/2 card slot reader loads of
digital still cameras use this format.
The AV/in/out is standard PAL/NTSC composite video
for recording off/on a Standard external Video recorder vhs(Tape) also for sensitive security camera use etc....
The DV in/out is for taking the infra red link from a DVD player and recording it on to the digital camera,,,,,,,,
subsequently for replaying out on to the vhs recorder Ok Paul england Uk

Thanks Paul.
I've got the camcorder now, but It's quite complex. If I have any more queries, I'll post back

Thanks again

Hi kwunder, I have since found out about the IEEE1394
connection,, it HAS to use a FIREWIRE adaptor
they are available from PC stores, also sometimes from
the place where the cam was purchased at a discount
a 2 port type £50 a 3 port £70
as i do not have one. The connector looks like a Miniature USB it runs at 400 MHZ Pow Fast E'h the minimum spec for the computer is P300 MHZ and possibly 2X 20GB Hard Disks to transfer the Digital stuff, to then edit it from one HD to the other, check it, then download it back on to a standard VHS ETC

Aaaaahhhhhhh

I have seen a firewire card with 4 ports & MGI Videowave SE for £69
I need to read my manual before I get any cables though as I believe you can get 4 or 6 pin connectors to use in the firewire card. I will probably also have to upgrade my HD as it is just 8.4GB. I suppose this would be OK for small films, but useless for anything bigger than 10 minutes.

Thanks for the info G4AWZ

Please could you let me know the make and model of your camera and how much you paid, as I am considering buying a camera that has AV-in capabilties, there are so many out there and the prices all seem very high for this feature.

Thanks
