Hi all,

Does anybody know what are the differences between CAM and TCAM?
Does one switch carries both CAM and TCAM?

Thanks in advance!

This is from cisco's site, regarding TCAM information

About Switching Database Manager

The Gigabit Ethernet interfaces use the forwarding engine and the ternary content addressable memory (TCAM) to implement the Layer 2 and Layer 3 search engine functionality. The Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching information is maintained in TCAM. The switching database manager (SDM) is the Layer 3 software subsystem that manages the Layer 3 switching information maintained in TCAM.

This is done for supplementation of L2<->L3 Switching
in switches which support such things (29xx, 65xx are
good examples of this).

All cisco switches carry CAM for L2 functions, but TCAM comes into play when L3 switching (or GBIC's) are in use as well.
