I can't connect to a Callpilot via the serial port. The IP address was lost and advice from another tread was to use hyper terminal via a serial cable.
I have a new laptop with windows vista and there is no serial port so i figured I could use a USB TO SERIAL cable, but its not working.

Does any one know of a good USB to SERIAL cable that works?

also can I use PUTTY instead of hyper terminal?

thanks, Dave

has the Call Pilot been on the network or does it maybe still have the default IP address?

Any terminal emulation program is fine
the default setting for serial communication is 9600 8 N 1

Keyspan is the best one out there...it comes with a driver cd all for about $30. Amazon.com.....

wcmyers3, There was no network cable plugged in so you would think it was default, but I tried 192.168.110.10 with my laptop as 192.168.110.11 and nothing. Couldn't get a responds pinging it either.
This Call pilot is a 150, any difference?

gforce9, Thanks I will pay to get the right tool for the job. I have a 1 foot cable that had female end nuts and you can't connect the cable with nut against nut, Thats nuts!
Plus I was using a USB extender cable to reach my laptop.

I'm sure you checked, but is your subnet mask 255.255.255.0?

It's a simple mistake, but when you're in a rush, it's easy to overlook the simple stuff.

RikRogers, I did and it was 255.255.255.0.

I got a better cable and it worked Great! Thanks everybody!!!!
