please can anyone advise on why xmlconfig, wscp are used rather than the seemingly easier option of the admin console

There are several reasons and one of them is that sometimes unix machines do not have access to GUI Consoles and so its difficult to configure and start or stop the Application servers. XMLConfig can be used there very easily.

Futhermore if everything is hosed and you can't even get to the admin screen you will wishing you knew anything about the actual config file. This is true of almost all applications that run on Unix and almost none that run on Windows.

Sometimes I bypass all the admin programs and just modify the admin DB directly (this is not advisable, but sometimes VERY necessary).

It is like having to modify the Windows registry for a program that has been so hopelessly foobared that it doesn't want to respond or work at all. Einstein47

Hi,

We are using WebSphere 3.5 on AIX and have written scripts which use the wscp shell to start/stop individual Application Servers. This way a non-administrator can have limited control over WebSphere via a simple options menu for start/stop of Application Servers and WebSphere as well. After each restart of WebSphere all logs files are archived thereby maintaining the current set only.
