Calling Flash like an API

Hello all,

Can Flash be extended to allow ActionScript or JavaScript to call an already loaded swf file's internal functions?

What I'm trying to do is build an HTML navigational system which will work for both Flash and HTML without causing the page which holds the Flash to reload. If the page doesn't reload then I can take advantage of the pre-caching of the Flash Objects...

Any help would be great.

the only option i know of is to use frames.
