We currently use Nortel Opt 11 PBXs and our phones display Caller ID info for incoming calls but the numbers are unformatted and simply run together, e.g. 3035551212. Nortel does not have a way to change the format of the display info to something more readable, like (303) 555-1212.

Does the 3300 have a way to format this information, for example, so that the NPA is in parentheses and the NXX and DN are separated by a dash?

Nope. Sorry. the pbx spits out the CLID the same way it receives it from the C.O.

So, why can my home phone do it but Nortel and Mitel PBXs can't? Weird. :)

The CLASS info you get on your phone phone is a very different creature then the ANI info that comes in via PRI and E&M trunks on a pbx. CLASS info is formatted to be readable, ANI info is not so we, as the pbx vendor, can route on DNIS digits received on ANI trunks, or display the calling number, whatever the telco wants to send us. Since we would not understand the ( sent in a CLASS burst, we would have to send back an invalid response to the carrier.
Could the telco's make it more presentable? Sure, I imagine. But would take a lot of cooperation with the manufacturers.
As well (not 100% certain on this), ANI/DNIS info is dtmf'd to us when it is on a digital E&M trunk, no ('s available in dtmf tones. That's my take on things, hope it helps.

That's understandable, but why couldn't the PBX format the CID info before it displays it on the phone? If we're receiving 3035551212 on the PRI, why can't the PBX display that as (303) 555-1212 one the phone?

It's just a readability issue, and certainly not a big deal. I just wish we had the option to change the format display.

Thanks!

We're not Mitel customers yet but our Mitel sales rep said that he'd be glad to enter in a DCR once we become Mitel customers! :)

Hah! That's a nice catch. I'm not sure how far he'd get with a DCR, but there is always hope!

To answer you question, MitelTech is very correct in the portion regarding how the CallerID (CLID/ANI) is sent to the phone system.

Regarding how the information is sent to the display, it can be changed by the manufacture. When a phone call comes into a phone, your phone system (Mitel or Nortel) "talks" to the phone first. It sends it information like what button to light, what information to display on the display, and commands like "RING_PHONE" and "RING_PHONE_STOP." The phone is actually a very stupid computer. It can't funcition without the switch (the PBX) their to give it instruction. Think about your printer, it does it's job well, prints when it's told to. Take your computer away and it's useless.

The display information on your phones display is simply how the manufacture wanted it displayed and it CAN be changed to be formated to look better. With that said, it is the manufacture who needs to make they're system display things properly.

As for the portion where the CLASS is discussed, I'm not so sure that's true. When I plug in a VISTA 350 to my 1FL I get "(xxx)xxx-xxxx." When I plug in my SX-200 ICP MX, on the same 1FL, I get "xxxxxxxxxx." With that said, I wonder if its the phone/phone system that does the formatting???? (more then likely).

The outgoing caller ID for my PRI card is set up to be my office main number by my PRI line provider. I was requested by end-users to have the outgoing caller ID changed to the actual DID of the phone making the call. First my PRI line provider said they could do it (easily). A month later they said my SX-200 tech had to program the PRI card. I got my SX-200 tech to program the PRI card to output the correct number but he told me I had to get the PRI provider to use that number. Now the PRI provider says they can't do that, they can only output one number, e.g., the office main number.

Does this sound right or is the PRI provider wrong again? If they are right, I wish they would of told me this before I paid my SX-200 for his time programming the PRI card.

Your ISDN provider (PRI) should give you two options, at least they do here in Ontario:

1) They can send out the CallerID (ANI) for you.
2) Allow the switch and only the swtich to send out the ANI. Your Mitel technician should be able to program the PRI Card/NSU to send out your DID Numbers when a DID extension makes a outgoing call or to program a universal ANI when a non-DID extensions makes a outgoing call.

Not sure how other providers work, but I have never had one here in Ontario says what you saying. Perhaps it has to do with the protocol being used?
