Call to undefined function: ldap_connect() in unix

hi,
i have a php script which lets people login using authenication through the LDAP server, but i kept getting this error..

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: ldap_connect() in /opt/Apache/htdocs/project/login3.php on line 53

I had this problem when i'm on windows too. After uncommenting the extension line for ldap in php.ini, i got the problem solved...
But on unix, it seems that i need to solve it using a different way. I have tried installing openldap and ldapauthmod on the unix system, but it still cant works.
Does anyone knows how to solve this problem? Pls help,thxxx

Generally, on unix-like OSes, you have to recompile PHP to provide additional functionality.
