I'm looking for some general info on the birth, transmission and death of a CDR. I'm a non-Telephony ex-Unix hack. How/where is it generated and where is it sent for processing by a Telco service provider. Anyone got any useful tips or pointers?
thx

CDR's are generated at the switch for every call made. Then, forwarded to a mediation platform and then on to the billing system to be rated (charged according to duration, price plan and time of call).

CDR Records normally are not generated until the end of the call since they contain the call duration information. A text string is usually sent out via a serial port to a rpinter or capturing destination. Some PBXs use a buffer file to store a limited number of CDR records if the output device is not available.

Most PBXs give you an option of capturing only external calls so you do not collect large amounts of unnecessary data (station to station calls). Robert Harris
