I am looking for a number(s) to make one own's line ring. Some sort of callback number to verify the phone rings.

I vaguely remember using such a test number in the Seattle area, but somehow now I can't find any references. One would dial one own's prefix followed by four "special" digits, then one would flash the line, and hang up. After hanging up, the phone would start ringing. [at some moment there was a special tone]. For example if one's number was 547-5327, one would dial 547-xxxx, where the xxxx digits were the same for any number.

The reason for asking this question is that I would like to alert/speak with a person at another extension connected to one single line, and I don't know how to alert the other person. Alternatively does anybody know of any inexpensive, perhaps radio shack gadget to make the line ring? [a method to shut down the tone while one talks would also be very helpful, but I doubt one exists]. I thought about connecting the line to a 50 volt source to make it ring for a few seconds, but I'm afraid of damaging something and then being charged by the telco!

Many thanks!

why not just hook a buzzer up to a spare pair or get one of the wireless intercoms RS sells ?

if you have two spare pairs you could use a buzzer on one and supply talk battery on the other without having to deal with the dial tone or tying the line up

(hooking 50vlots up to the line isn't going to get you a ring )

I remember years ago that you could call the number you were testing. You would hear a beep, hang up and the phone would ring. Now with the advent of VM on these lines, the call just goes to VM. If there is no VM, it might still work.

My Biggest problem is that I almost always believe what I tell myself.

Call your local telco and tell them you want to ring an extension on your line and see if they have a number.

They still exist on the LEC switches, in California at least.

It is a combined TouchTone™ and RINGBACK test.

In Pacific Bell COs for 5ESS or DMS100s, it has been the code 958 + the last four digits of the line number, then dialtone, at this point you can test the TouchTone™ pad by keying 1 thru 0; getting two beeps is good, one beep at any point is bad. To ring the line flash the hook and you get a LOW tone, then hangup and the line will ring. It will stop after five mintues if you don't answer or go off hook.

In the GTE/Verzion COs for 5ESS or DMS100s the code is 111 + the last four, same as above.

For the GTD5 switches the RINGBACK is the line number you want to ring: you call the line number from the line, then you will hear a "tick tone", then hangup and the line will ring.

I'll have to get back about the TouchCalling™ test on the GTD5. I haven't done one in a long time and I want to make sure the format is still working.

I have found that most telco folks don't even know these test functions even exist. The format is the same for all 5ESS or DMS100 or DMS10 switches, but the code will probably be different in your state or region, if the code is even assigned in the switch.

You will probably have to do alot of hunting to find the code that is used. That's what I used to do years ago.

Hope this helps! Happy poking!

evan if you find the code you still will likely have a recording and dial tone to contend with as try to talk and it wont be usable if the phone line is in use .

a buzzer or intercom would allow you to actually talk to the other person evan if the line where in use
