Call Accounting

I just tried to set up call accounting on a customers new pc. Problem came in when I took my cat5 (RJ45) cable from the SMDR to the 355AF, to a radio shack 25 to 9 adapter. I reached around the pc to find NO serial ports at all on the machine. The computer guys in the area said that all the new pc's are starting to not provide them on the mother board. PCI cards are not easy to find in stock at many stores. the usb/serial adaptor would not install on the xp home on that machine.

Keep this in mind on new applications.

Yes, this is true, New Laptops and Others no longer come with Serial Ports. I hate that.

I had good luck getting a PCI serial port card off ebay.

Another Technician I know just got a new laptop, and ended up having to get a USB to Serial converter.

Once, after Blowing the serial port on one of my Laptops, I was able to get a PCMCIA to SERIAL adapter.

Been using USB to Serial converter for several years. Works fine lasts a long time - Bafo is the brand I have.
