I come from Access and am having some difficulty with the transition. In an invoice/order input form (layout), I cannot figure out how to calculate fields within the layout during data input. In Access, I attach code to a property to calculate another field upon leaving the field to which the code is attached. I used this for both multiplying price times quantity and for customer item descriptions, based upon the options chosen while ordering.

I have no clue how to do this in Filemaker. I do see how to use caluclated fields in a table, but that does not seem like it would do what I want, to calculate fields in a layout during datainput and at a specific time during the input (and without having to push a button that tells the program to do the calculaiton).

How do I do this?

FileMaker is a database, not a calculationspreadsheet.
So, things are different.

In FileMaker the calcualtion will happen at field exit.
Unless you have the calculation with a script, which can happen at field exit, but this is not native in FileMaker.

Some other calcualtions will only happen after commit record/request.
It all depends how the structure of your solution is.
