Hi all,

Not started using SBS 2008 yet and was wonderign about CAL leeway. In the 2003 version you had a 5 CAL leeway (ie if you had 10 CALS it'd let you get away with 15 connections before being arsey). Is it the same in SBS 2008? I'm installign it in a new office that has 6 users. The product comes with 5 CALS so if they're get away with 6 users temporarily I'll do that.

Thanks

R

There is no technical mechanism for CAL tracking or enforcement in SBS 2008. It's a legal requirement, meaning that you have to have the paperwork proving CAL purchase in the file cabinet.

The nice thing with SBS 2008 is that you can buy single CALs, whereas in SBS 2003 you had to buy them in packs of five.

You should be able to purchase an additional CAL as needed and not let that be a blocker for your initial rollout.

And just bear in mind that here in the States if anyone were to report you to the BSA for Piracy, it can carry a fine of $200K. So the extra $100 for a CAL is worth the investment.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Piracy? Easy there fella!

The question related to whether Sbs2008 had a point that it would stop allowing inbound connections and login attempts in the same way 2003 does. While I appreciate your heads up in regard to the legality of not correctly licensing software I think you may have misinterpreted my intention.

Dave. Cheers for the advice.

The product comes with 5 CALS [red]so if they're get away with 6 users[/red] temporarily I'll do that.

Fairly easy to interpret the above as an attempt to get around the licensing instead of purchasing what is needed, even if temporary.

I'm glad that is not your intention.

I hope you find this post helpful.
