Hi, I was wondering if I could get some help cabling my house. I've never done any cabling before, and I have three PCs in the basement, and one PC on the second floor. The three downstairs are networked, and I want the one upstairs connected to the hub. I don't know what this cat5 is, but I'm up to any suggestions and help.. thanks

CAT5 is simply unshielded twisted pair. The patch cables you have your other machines connected to your hub are more than likely CAT5. Just find a point where you can go up, preferably thru a stud, so it will be inside the wall. Cut a hole, Put a network jack (I think you can get em at Home Depot) and voila, you are on the network. Category 5 is a series of specifications about twists per inch and permissible cross talk between wires, etc. both the materials and the instillation must conform to cat 5 to get 100 mbit networks

For one run, I would invest in a premade cable of 100 feet rather than invest the time to learn the skills to terminate bulk cable ( a middle postion would be to pull bulk cable yourself and bring in a expert to terminate it, that may be pricier than either extreeme) I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
