I have recently started doing more cat-5e cable installation. I also have to troubleshoot cable issues from time to time.

So, I thought it may be time to get a tool kit. Keep in mind, this isn't my main source of income, so, I don't need top of the line equipment.

I'd like some suggestions on a cable tester, tone generator, and other tools you think I would find useful. I would also like suggestions on where to purchase them from.

Thanks

If you don't want to spend the money to get good stuff don't waste the money. I just bought the new fluke tone/probe abd as a basic trouble shooting tool it works well.

I know what you're saying and I get your point. However, I'm not sure how much money I need to sink into a lot of these tools as it's not the main part of my job.

I am considering a Fluke Microscanner Pro as it looks like a very good piece of equipment. The cost isn't too bad either. So, I guess I'm looking for some good middle of the road equipment. I would obviously spend more if I was going to be using the equip for my daily work.

Spend the extra 20 to 30 dollar's for a high quality toner, probe, cat 5 tester. Even if you don't get your finger's in it to much, you don't want your tools to fail. Check Graybar or Hite.

its a situation that the occasinal user needs the better quaility tools to help make up for the lack of skill that the guy doing it all day everyday develops

I would also recommend the Fluke MicroScanner Pro. I just bought 2 more last week for my tech's. The best prices that I have found on these units is from AccuTech. Their number is 1-800-432-0325 Ask for Spencer. Also the best prices on Cat5E on the Berk-tek cable.

For basic network cabling checks, I use the LAN-Rover PRO. It checks for continuity/wiring missmatch, checks cable length, and has a tone function. It is a great basic tool for under $200. Keep in mind, this tool will not certify cabling infrastructure to the TIA/EIA standard, but it is a great little troubleshooting aid.

One tool not given due consideration is your choice of step ladders. The only ladder I use is the Werner. It works with both sizes of Maglights stored in the holes in the top. The holes in the top are perfectly round, where the others' ladders out there are oblong I guess to hold a paint brush upside down, not a flashlight-it's dark up there.

Why is there never a phone in the phone closet?
