We are researhing how to provide video conferening to individuals computers in our office.

What is the recommend cable type to use for video at the desktop? Will Cat 5e work or should it be something else. If there is a better type coming in the future for this purpose that would be good to know.

Going off of minimal knowledge on video transmitting. I am not sure that Cat5 will give the needed bandwidth for a good amount of video. You may have to look into coax.

I think you need to look at the equipment first, then determine what you need for bandwidth. Video conferencing will do reasonably well at 384k. We have ISDN installations w/128k that do OK, but not great. The systems that go from one town to another and run over several LAN's, the WAN between two or more campus locations connected via a T1, do very well with 384k of bandwidth on the LAN along with all the data going on as well. A 100 mbs Cat5e connection at the desktop should do very well for you, if you are using a similar setup.

Good Luck!

It is only my opinion, based on my experience and education...I am always willing to learn, educate me!

If you are going to do video conferencing on the pcs all you need is a good 100m lan connection at the desktop.
The rest has to do with where you are connecting to and the way the lan and wan are set up.
So yes cat5e will do fine to the desktop.
