Has anyone developed a task list, perhaps within Microsoft Project, for new cabling infrastructure that they would be willing to share?

I am presently involved with a few new facilities we are building and want to create my own task list / checklist, but was wondering if anyone had already done this.

thanks.

I am involved in a big cabling project as well and I am going by the seat of my pants.
I sure would like to see whatever you get on his.
Thanks.

How I'd run a 1000+ drop job

Get your foreman in and start with backbone pathways and pulling; that needs the most manpower given pull points.
While he has his crew on that he can scope and freely think for himself about tributary pulling crews, ironwork crews, dock and freight scheduling times and material storage.
Oh yeah;
Hire union! (They're competent enough to have the above inbread).

I checked this thread also hoping for more than what I have. The last big job we done here was cable a new 153,000 building. The way I handled this is just like the small jobs and start with the building plans.

This will give you a good estimate of the number of what type drops, amount of each type cable, racks, patch panels and jacks

. The above mentioned building was a bite more of a PITA than most because of the size. The distance per floor was greater than 285' between the closet and the jack so we had two closets per floor to stay within the standards. Making a dividing point in the building and pulling to either east or west closet was involved. But this was done for all three floors to make the building uniform.

Using the scale made it really close to determine how much cabling was needed per pull. I added 10' at the closet ends and 8' on the drops. Then its getting in the materials and get the guys ready to pull cable. Start with the longest points back to the closets and work your way back from there. Made it easier for us anyways. After you stare at the plans long enough you will begin to get a feel for the distances.

This building was empty so that made it easy to store everything until we can actually get the pulls done.

I am still up for a "better way" should someone have one.

When is the last time you helped someone, just because you were able to?

Every site is a custom job. Mikeydidit will just have to keep doing it the same way.[peace]

Have an experienced installer do the initial walk through. There will not be anyway to every get around that and quote be phone or create a document that a salesman without cabling experience could use to quote.

Everything depends on your crew and how they roll.
You can have general in house worksheets for some estimating such as:
With labor and material,
$XX.XX is my cost of penetrating a brick firewall
$XX.XX is my cost of penetrating a drywall firewall
$XX.XX is my cost of cable tray per foot installed
$XX.XX is my cost for each wall drop (single, double, etc.)
ETC..

MS Project would be good for extremely large projects where you want to set time lines and cost goals.

The most important thing you will do on the project, IMHO, is the finalized documentation. Create it in Visio, or something similar, put copies in a big envelope, leave it in the temination room and on a CD with the customer along with any data from your certifier.
Everyone here on this forum could easily help with that part but will never be able to tell you how to bid a job because any checklist will be dependent on what you promise the customer.
