I need to extend our original ethernet network to the length of about 600ft. Would I use repeaters to do this? This network will have 30 users and 4 servers.

Total length of 600 feet ? You may want to think about the total infrastructure now instead of later.
Have you considered a fiber optic backbone ?

Yes, that was my original suggestions, but the company does not want to pay for it. Any other ideas?

You could dig up some original 1/2 inch thick Ethernet coaxial cable, cheap, and run over 1000 feet. (10BASE2). Of course, for cheap, you only get 10 mb/sec performance.
;-)

Fiber is the right solution for this application. And it's not that much more costly than other less-robust solutions. You can buy the fiber pre-terminated, so long as you install it with care. Add two media adapters and you're off to the races. If you're installing yourself, you can probably complete on a budget of $800 or less. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right....

Nice way to put it Jimbo, that is perfect. I'm always cautious to tell the customer "no, that can't be done". They then make a call to my competition who comes in and give them the multiple repeater solution and wow, i'm the idiot.

Good Answer :)

Daron the Tut product do work, they just don't scale, can't upgrade, and are not standards based. 50 nm Multimode Fiber will go 10 meg , 100 meg, 1 gig and 10 gig for 200 meters, so can scale and upgrade and IS standards based. But if his Powers That Be have mandated long distance copper, Tut's DSL based answers are the best one can do.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Rember the old Fram oil filter commercial ?

I get lots of calls like this. Hey, can you come look at our network and see why it is so slow? My first recommendation is usually to get rid of those flat satin phone cords being used for ethernet, then we look at the topology and hardware. If i find something like this that is not standards based for the technology, i usually recommend a standards based solution before spending much time on real network analysis.

Yup they do work, but if or when you do start to have problems, that is the first place i start looking.
