I have been told, not by a reliable source, that there is a manufacturer that has developed Cat5E and Cat6 that is in a ribbon for using under carpets when trenching is not an option.

Has anyone heard of this? If this is so---I am sure there is a tool that helps to run this under the carpet???? Or some sort of instructions on how to use? This also would be good for retrofitting homes.

Since it sounds to good to be true, it probably isnt True!!

Thanks

i dunno how it would work very well, if it were true. if it is a true ribbon cable, it would be flat and there would be no twists. that would make the cable almost useless for high-speed data apps. just my opinion though.

thanks, tim

I had a sample of the under the catpet cat5 flat cable once that I picked up at a trade show

I;ll dig around later and see if I can find it

Hitatchi makes neat undercarpet cable. Usually use in low traffic environment like conference room.

I haven't seen one, but it seems to me that if you remove the round PVC casing leaving 8 individual strands, then encase them in a flat PVC (or what ever) casing, it would fit nicely almost anywhere w/o effecting connectivity

I seem to remember that it might be AMP who offers it--but I went to AMP/Tyco's site and did not find anything.

Thanks

well heres one here you might try

this one looks intersting also

I cant find that sample I picked up but it was from one of the not major companys

I was thinking it was mohalk but I dont see a mention on their website

as to pulling it labor saving devices makes a spiffy under the carpet fishtape.

I carry one and its the type of thing you may only use once a year or so but it does the job.

Office supply stores carry those flates strips to put 110 power cords. I imagine u could put one of those under a carpet with the resulting bump.

AMP/Netconnect ( does have an under carpet cable. Very thin. Suppoed to be Cat5e, but as I've only got about 12" of it, not much to test it with.

A Tool for running under carpets and around other places. Green Lee has out a flat fish tape which cranks back in -25 feet long, 12 bucks at Home depot. Goes strait and flat.

Why is there never a phone in the phone closet?

Under Carpet Cabling - friction will get it. It's been around since the 1970's and the same issues remain with using it...and of course re-installing it.

Key point someone previously made is "LOW TRAFFIC"

Before you use undercarpet consider other means of concealing the cabling and putting it in place. I don't know your environment and just for example:

- remove baseboard (wood) and or trim and route drywall (router , no NOT Cisco, that spinnin' thing !)

- walls ?

- air waves ?

- cavities ?

The older I get, the less I know
