Why does my fixed wireless(sprint broadband) modem take a crossover from it's ethernet port to my NIC? Layer 3(modem) to layer 2(NIC). I thought you only used a cross on devices at the same layer, like router to router. And what cable should I use if I add a router in between?? I would think -modem(cross)router(straight)NIC- but now I'm not sure.

Your mixing apples and oranges here..

The crossover is not based on layers.. that is software.. layer 2 is bridging/switching and layer 3 is routing etc..

The crossover swaps Rx and Tx pairs

Rx------------Tx
Tx------------Rx

Normally yes, you need a crossover when connecting switch to switch because the hardware assumes one thing and you have done another.

Router to PC.. crossover needed.. if there is a hub between them.. two straight throughs will do.
