I have seen many cable testers available.
I own a Siemons STM-8, and it works great, but I need one that will "certify" the cable to a cat 5 level for speed.
Do the ones that test for near end cross talk test for speed as well? Or not always?

Help..... I can't afford a thousand bucks for a tester!

Thanks,
Rich

I'm not sure any of the testers certify for speed. They test the cable for the parameters that are required to pass cat5 specs and thus the spec says the cable will work at 100 meg but the tester does not say that. It will tell you what the corsstalk and impedence etc. are at 100 meg though.

We just got a new tester made by fluke..it will test the new Catagory 6 standards....the two test that are important are attenuation and Dual-next..as well as the basics of line mapping..cable length...to tell you the truth though..for cat 5..you might be able to find a used wavetek or fluke and not spend the BIG BUCKS.

if you just need it to certify one or two jobs you can use your siemans and then pay someone to come in and certify
I beleive you can also rent them.

If i could suggest one it is Fluke Omniscanner2. We use one for Cat5,Cat 6, and fiber. Its no OTDR but works very well.
