I got this email from Ideal today. I know there have been quite a few discussions on testers and which ones to use, and thought this may help those, like me, who are in the market for more up to date equipment.

In the high-tech realm of datacom cable testing, you need the latest technology to stay on your game. IDEAL wants to do everything possible to help you do that. That’s why you can trade in your old CAT5/5e/6 tester and receive $500 cash back on the purchase of a new LANTEK 6 or $1000 cash back on the purchase of a new LANTEK 7. Ask your local IDEAL distributor for details. Keeping up with the latest technology has never been so affordable.

The first thing that comes to my mind, is this LANTEK any good. I too received this email. Most all the major players offer some sort of a trade in program. Not sure I have heard of this product, so I guess it would be natural to be skeptical of it.

Fluke will give you $1k for an old 5/5e testor when you buy an Omniscanner or a DSP4300. Agilent had one on the Wirescope not to long ago, but I can't find it now. They do have a 50% off the DualRemote when buying the Framescope.

The Ideal unit is the former Wavetek. I have both the Wavetek Pro XL for CAT 5 and the 8155 for CAT5E. Lots of good features including the ability to test fiber with their add-on kit.

Thankfully the Ideal unit is a vast improvement over the Wavetek units.
All testers have their own unique features, look at them all and really go through the menus to determine which is easier to use. Which one is easier to find what you are looking for.
Which manufacturer has the best warranty turnaround policy if you ever need to have it fixed.
Does the manufacturer have anyone in your area that really knows how to use the units in case you have questions, or need training?

Price should be your 3rd or 4th consideration, support and features should be your 1st and 2nd.
