Hi,

My laptop's built in ethernet port even though i have a cable plugged in keeps saying network cable not plugged disconnected. I have tested this with 2 different working cables.

my setup is xp home edition
i have verizon dsl which works with my other machines no problems. All of my machines are hooked up though a Linksys Cable/DSL Router.

No link lights appear on the router when the cable is plugged into the ethernet port of the laptop
Windows says all is working. No conflicts. I am using the latest drivers.
Pinging the loopback is fine
running ipconfig /all say that the State is Media Disconnected. Is this a hardware issue or some configuration problems within windows xp itself that i'm missing.
THe ICF is turned off. I am not running any firewall at all.
any help would be appreciated. THe NIC is a REaltek 8139

When did it stop working?

what was the last thing to happen when it stopped?

the plug on the router may have gone bad, try the connection in another port on the router.

You are plugging straight into the Linksys switch/router, with no wallplates or anything in between?

I am with VMPhilosophy on this one, it is not unheard of for a switch port to go south.

But,

1. Make sure your router has the newest firmware from Linksys;

2. You might consider using the Realtek drivers instead of the branded reference versions:
3. If you are using static ips make sure it is a unique IP on the network segment.

For the sake of completeness, it may be the port on your laptop. The pins can get screwed up by something as simple as a good yank on the cable while connected.

Its not the ports on the router. I use these same ports and cables with 3 other machines and they work.

It stopped working after it was serviced. The mobo had to be replaced/The Place that fixed it said everything was tested and it worked there. I'm thinking either he's lying or something happened during shipment back to me.

I am using the latest realtek drivers from the realtek website

Sounds more and more like the problem is the onboard NIC. Often this is part of a mini-PCI board, so you might check that it is in there correctly and everything connected to the board. It will be behind the largest door on the bottom of the case. Maybe something did not get plugged in.

Well, I think you need to give it back and say everything was not working, I agree with bcaster. If it wasn't working when you got it back. and it was just serviced... thats where you need to be looking.
