I currently have one win2000/linux box, one HP b132 and a motorola cable modem.
I would like to connect the modem to the HP box and have the
PC accessing the net via the HP.
Are there any FAQs or guides for creating this type of network system. Also has any one managed to carry out this type of setup.

Thanx

Hi,

Once you have the cable modem in the HP and up and running on the internet it's simple to use it as your gateway to the net -- difficulty then is to make it a secure connection that bad people can't take advantage of.

Are you connected yet? Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

thanx
Well i'm connected , but only via a direct connection from the HP and not from the hub.

so -- sorry to sound stupid here, but what it looks like you want is:

Internet <-> Cable Modem <-> HP <-> Hub <-> PC(s)

So -- your HP needs to be on two networks, the Internet and your private network (LAN).

The steps you need to go through are:

1 - Get the HP working on the Cable Modem onto the Internet. This will give the HP an IP address that is assoiated with the Cable Modem.

2 - Connect HP to the Hub, configure the network card so that it has the correct IP address and subnet mask (for your LAN), this IP address and subnet mask will be *different* to the Cable Modem's, and you will have to assign them yourself.

3 - Connect PC(s) to the Hub. Configure the network card on each PC so that it has one of your IP addresses and the correct subnet mask. On each PC setup the HP's LAN IP address and the Default Gateway, so that requests for IP addresses not on your LAN will be routed though the HP.

Test the set-up like this.

On the HP:
[tab]ping [tab]ping each (some, at least) of your PC's.

On each PC:
[tab]ping another PC.
[tab]ping the HP LAN IP address
[tab]ping the HP LAN Cable Modem IP address
[tab]ping
Important - Don't Skip This Bit
Once you have this working -- disconnect the Cable Modem from the Internet and install some firewall software. This is vital - don't let all the bad guys in, once they find an unprotected network your life will be hell - and your remaining time in employment probably best measured in hours rather than years.

That's it, I think. Did I miss anything, anybody?
